As many of you may know, ULTRA Music Fest 2011 took place this past weekend (March 25-27). If you didn’t get a chance to go (myself included), it looks like you missed out on an awesome time. There’s nothing better than jamming to some sick artists for an entire weekend in Miami, preferably double-barreling some Boom Boom.
Here’s a little preview to rub it in:
According to a recent article in Billboard, here are some of the Top 3 moments seen or heard Friday-Sunday. This is only a teaser of what is written in the original article. Make sure to check it out to get the entire scoop!
Friday:
1. ’80s pop icons Duran Duran showed their age by opening their main stage Ultra set with 1985 James Bond soundtrack single “A View To A Kill.”
2. David Guetta announced the May 2 release of the first single from his forthcoming, as-yet-unnamed album, the follow-up to 2009 multi-platinum breakthrough “One Love.”
3. D.C. DJ Miss Nine made the most of a challenging gig: Keeping the crowd going with extra-large house beats while roadies swapped gear between sets at the Ultra Live stage.
Saturday:
1. Trance DJ/producer and Armada label head Armin van Buuren talked up his association with Flowd, a new GPS/social media app that allows fans to check out and check into their favorite DJs’ favorite spots worldwide. “We’re going to update it at the same time my Facebook and Twitter feeds,” he said.
2. Backstage at Ultra, Dirty Vegas, whose “Days Go By” was famously featured on a Mitsubishi TV spot in 2003, were basking in the electronic explosion.
3. It was a techno DJ lovefest at the Beatport Beach Party. Richie Hawtin, Ambivalent, Barem, and Carlo Lio crowded the booth while Dubfire, formerly of hit-making duo Deep Dish, dropped minimal rhythms for the neon-decked crowd.
Sunday:
1. Diddy’s been threatening to break out as a dance music force for years. He continued the tease with an appearance during longtime friend and collaborator DJ Erick Morillo’s Ultra main stage set.
2. Heineken taxi tops buzzed around South Beach, boasting the brand’s UMF sponsorship with the tagline, “Have a beer with 150,000 of your friends.” This marked a dual victory for any electronic music event: Having enough scale to secure a sponsor willing to throw in promotional media dollars, and sufficiently defending its audience as dominantly 21+.
3. Carl Cox donned an afro wig and dropped classics, jazz and disco to a tiny, invite-only crowd of 200 at Mokai, which included international industry-ites and fellow DJs Steve Lawler and Ferry Corsten.
Sounds like an awesome time to me! If you missed ULTRA 2011, there will be more to come next year. Peace out, Boomheads!
