Friday:

1. ’80s pop icons Duran Duran showed their age by opening their main stage Ultra set with 1985 James Bond soundtrack single “A View To A Kill.”

2. David Guetta announced the May 2 release of the first single from his forthcoming, as-yet-unnamed album, the follow-up to 2009 multi-platinum breakthrough “One Love.”

3. D.C. DJ Miss Nine made the most of a challenging gig: Keeping the crowd going with extra-large house beats while roadies swapped gear between sets at the Ultra Live stage.

Saturday:

1. Trance DJ/producer and Armada label head Armin van Buuren talked up his association with Flowd, a new GPS/social media app that allows fans to check out and check into their favorite DJs’ favorite spots worldwide. “We’re going to update it at the same time my Facebook and Twitter feeds,” he said.

2. Backstage at Ultra, Dirty Vegas, whose “Days Go By” was famously featured on a Mitsubishi TV spot in 2003, were basking in the electronic explosion.

3. It was a techno DJ lovefest at the Beatport Beach Party. Richie Hawtin, Ambivalent, Barem, and Carlo Lio crowded the booth while Dubfire, formerly of hit-making duo Deep Dish, dropped minimal rhythms for the neon-decked crowd.

Sunday:

1. Diddy’s been threatening to break out as a dance music force for years. He continued the tease with an appearance during longtime friend and collaborator DJ Erick Morillo’s Ultra main stage set.

2. Heineken taxi tops buzzed around South Beach, boasting the brand’s UMF sponsorship with the tagline, “Have a beer with 150,000 of your friends.” This marked a dual victory for any electronic music event: Having enough scale to secure a sponsor willing to throw in promotional media dollars, and sufficiently defending its audience as dominantly 21+.

3. Carl Cox donned an afro wig and dropped classics, jazz and disco to a tiny, invite-only crowd of 200 at Mokai, which included international industry-ites and fellow DJs Steve Lawler and Ferry Corsten.

Typical Nutrition Facts Label for Energy Drinks

A recent study published by the Official Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics determined something that we all probably knew deep down: Energy drinks are bad for you.

In their study on “Health Effects of Energy Drinks on Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults,” Seifert and colleagues found major negative effects of energy drinks, especially on the younger peeps in this country. As you may have heard, energy drinks contain tons of additives that basically shock the nervous system and stimulate the brain to make you more alert, awake, and energetic. However, like everything else in the world, everything comes at a price (not to mention the $3 it costs to buy the energy drink itself).

According to self-report surveys, the researchers found that 30% to 50% of adolescents consume energy drinks. Energy drinks contain high amounts of caffeine, which have been associated with seizures, cardiac abnormalities, mood disorders, etc. –especially among children and adolescents. Of the over 5,000 caffeine overdoses reported in the US in 2007, 46% occurred in people younger than 19 years old.

Scary stuff! I am no energy drink virgin, and have heard about the negative effects. I have never OD’d on energy drink consumption, but I can tell you the effects are definitely felt. I agree that energy drinks contain an unregulated and basically “unknown” level of caffeine that people–especially adolescents and young adults–don’t take seriously enough. Sure, energy drinks may provide that desired feeling in the short term, but is it really worth such negative long term effects?

Probably not. Remember Four Loko? I was in love with that stuff…until they made it illegal in Michigan. Just the other day I saw it on the shelves, but it was missing its main ingredient: caffeine. The drink did the trick, but I know it wasn’t safe.

The Downside: If you aren’t 21, don’t even try. I’m pretty sure all bars stop admitting minors (even if it is also a restaurant) around 9 or 10 PM. Also, bars can get pretty packed and loud if you’re just looking to grab a few drinks and chill with your friends.

Clubs

Clubs are insanely fun, especially if you like to get your groove on and scope out that sexy guy or gal from across the floor. People usually dress to impress (i.e. Jersey Shore), so don’t be afraid to get your Guido on (disclaimer: this probably won’t impress anyone, besides the Guidettes, of course). As long as you find people to dance with, you should be good. With the drinks flowing, beats pumpin’, and Boom Boom in your pocket, clubs are some of the hottest places to be at night, especially if you are in a big city.

The Downside: Dancing isn’t for everyone, and it might be hard to sit and socialize if the music is too loud. Also, your shoes end up filthy afterwards.

House Parties

You gotta love house parties. They can be any size you want them to be, until the hoards of people start showing up. News of house parties spreads quickly through word of mouth, so be prepared. However, they usually turn out to be really fun and there is nothing better than some cheap keg beer and some Jungle Juice, especially if you’re in college. Parties are fun for the people throwing them and for the people attending.

The Downside: That being said, parties are fun until someone heaves in the corner. Usually super packed and dirty inside and not so much fun for the hosts who have to clean up the next day.

So which venue is best? Looks like it’s up to you–what your tastes are and what you feel like for the evening. The best part about it, though? Bring some Boom Boom and you’ll be guaranteed to have a good time, wherever you choose to be.

It’s a city that sleeps during the day and parties at night. Definitely Boom Boom worthy.
